So thankful for today

lincoln_reflecting_poolThis fall I took a vacation to Washington, D.C.

Walking the halls of the different Smithsonians, it reminded me how thankful I was to live in 2015. The Smithsonian captured the history of many inventions that I am happy I have never had to do without. I also realized that there are many inventions that have been created in my lifetime that made me wonder how did we ever do business without them? While some things have come and gone during my business career (like carbon paper), some have changed the landscape forever.

Here’s a short list of technology I am thankful for…

1. The Internet. It has opened my mind to a world bigger than my backyard.
2. Video communications (like Skype). It allows me to see and talk to friends and family in faraway places, especially during the holidays. And it improves business communications.
3. Bluetooth. I can safely drive and talk.
4. Smart phones. My productivity at work has at least doubled, allowing me to accomplish more and still have a home life.
5. Computer projectors. There was a time you had to print off the presentation on transparencies – need I say more.
6. Medical technology. It has improved and saved the lives of many.
7. Google. I can find the answer to most questions whenever the need arises.
8. Plastics. Our safety glasses are made of plastic. I know of one incident this year that safety glasses saved an eye.
9. Motion detectors. They turn lights on and off keeping us safe while saving energy.
10. Emails and social media. Staying in touch with people, communicating, meeting management – all ensure progress in relationships allowing us to move the needle toward our goals.

This week has been the Thanksgiving Holiday. A time to think about all the things we are thankful for – family, friends, health, and food on our table. It is also a good time to be thankful for the time we live in – for technology, for our Democracy, for peace on American soil and around the world.

In short, it is a time to be thankful for the big and for the small things that make life special.white_house
